Governor approves her release on parole
It is with great joy that we announce that another domestic
violence survivor has been released on parole from state
prison!
Minda Wilcox was
released May 6th, 2009, after serving nearly 22 years of a 15-to-life sentence. The
parole board found Ms. Wilcox suitable for parole for the fifth time, and on May
1st the Governor decided to uphold the board's
decision.
Thanks to all of you who took the time to write, call,
and fax the Governor urging him to release Ms. Wilcox!
Free Battered Women especially would
like to express our tremendous gratitude and deep appreciation to our
colleagues at the USC’s Post-Conviction Justice Project, especially Law
Student Ashley Johndro, who represented Ms. Wilcox at her parole
hearing.
We
also would like to thank Ms. Wilcox’s past attorney, solo practitioner
Rich Pfeiffer, and Travis Brennan and his colleagues at Proskauer Rose in
Los Angeles, who have been representing Ms. Wilcox
through the California Habeas Project. Their commitment to the work
and to Ms. Wilcox is deeply valued and
appreciated.
Free
Battered Women and the Habeas Project wish Ms.
Wilcox much joy, strength, and courage as she begins the next
stage of her journey.
