Christy Camp |Martina Olea | Linda Lee Smith | Deborah Peagler governor denies Linda Lee Smith parole!
On August 8, 2008, the Governor publicly released his decision to reverse parole for Linda Lee Smith -- despite the fact that the parole board had found her suitable for parole for the ninth time since 1989. Linda is in her 28th year of a 15-to-life sentence in connection with the death of her two-year-old daughter, Amy, who was beaten to death by her abusive boyfriend in 1979. Although the victim in Linda's case was not her abusive partner, the fact that she was a battered woman was significant in her inaction to stop the crime. Amy's father and sister (who witnessed the crime) support Linda's release. Linda has remained disciplinary-free during her nearly three decades of incarceration, earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of La Verne, and continues to work toward her Master of Theology degree from Fuller Theological Seminary. Free Battered Women grieves with Linda, her family, and her attorneys over the Governor's latest reversal, and remains committed to fighting to secure her release.
